New Guinea is extremely rugged with few roads. Dug out canoes continue to be the primary form of transportation in and around the Island. Men will travel great distances up a river to acquire a large log. Towed back to the village, the log is carved out using an adz and fire. The prow is carved according to local tradition and often painted with natural pigments. Once finished, a dug out canoe can last for over 5 years. Once a canoe has aged beyond repair, it is often burned or otherwise destroyed. The prows are sometimes cut off and saved for artifact collectors. This is a true piece of cultural art, playing a significant role in the day-to-day lives of the people of New Guinea.
